Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar travelled to Beijing on Tuesday for talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, continuing a diplomatic push to broker an end to the Iran war.
The visit follows the weekend quadrilateral summit in Islamabad between the foreign ministers of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt, which produced an offer to host direct US-Iran talks “in coming days.”
China has signalled readiness to coordinate with Pakistan and other parties to promote a ceasefire.
Iran has agreed to allow 20 Pakistani-flagged ships through the Strait of Hormuz at two vessels per day as a confidence-building measure, though Washington and Tehran continue to contradict each other over whether substantive negotiations are actually under way.
