Donald Trump told Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper he is “strongly considering” withdrawing the United States from NATO, calling the alliance a “paper tiger” after European members declined to join or support Operation Epic Fury.
Trump singled out the UK, dismissing Britain’s navy as outdated and saying Keir Starmer had refused to help “decapitate” Iran.
Starmer responded at a press conference, saying he would “act in the British national interest” and that “this is not our war.”
Trump also told allies they were on their own regarding the Strait of Hormuz blockade, saying the US was “no longer concerned” with it and that other nations should “go get your own oil.”
The remarks sent shockwaves through NATO capitals ahead of tonight’s presidential address.
