A 20 year old Afghan illegal migrant has been arrested after attacking five people with a crowbar in the waiting room of Newton Community Hospital in Newton le Willows.
Police say the suspect entered the facility shortly before midday and began striking patients without warning.
Officers arrived within minutes and detained him at the scene.
All five victims have been taken to hospital, with injuries ranging from minor to serious but not life threatening.
Detectives are investigating the attacker’s background and possible motives.
Security has been increased at the hospital while officials reassure the public there is no wider threat.
