Former FBI Director James Comey was indicted on Tuesday for allegedly threatening Donald Trump’s life by posting an Instagram photo last May showing seashells arranged to read “86 47”.
A federal grand jury in North Carolina returned a two-count indictment charging Comey with making a threat to take the life of the President and transmitting that threat in interstate commerce, each carrying up to 10 years in prison.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said anyone threatening the President “will never be tolerated by the Department of Justice”.
Comey replied on Substack: “I’m still innocent, I’m still not afraid, and I still believe in the independent federal judiciary, so let’s go.”
Legal scholars including Jonathan Turley have warned the case faces serious First Amendment hurdles.
