Estonia Invokes NATO Article 4 After Russian Jets Breach Airspace

Estonia has formally requested a NATO Article 4 consultation following a “brazen” airspace violation by three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets.

The aircraft entered Estonian airspace near Vaindloo Island over the Gulf of Finland for around 12 minutes without flight plans, transponders, or communication with Estonian air traffic control.

Italian F-35s from NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission intercepted the jets, forcing them out.

Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna condemned the incursion as unprecedented.

Estonia summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires in Tallinn to protest.

The move signals Estonia views the incident as a serious threat to its territorial integrity and security.
