Former Ukrainian Official Andriy Portnov Assassinated in Madrid

Andriy Portnov, a former senior aide to ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, was shot dead on May 21 outside the American School of Madrid in the affluent suburb of Pozuelo de Alarcón.

The 51-year-old was ambushed by multiple gunmen around 9:15 a.m. local time after dropping off his children.

Witnesses reported he was shot several times in the back and head before the assailants fled into a nearby wooded area.

Portnov, a controversial figure in Ukrainian politics, was instrumental in drafting the 2014 “dictatorship laws” used to suppress the Euromaidan protests.

He faced multiple investigations in Ukraine for treason and corruption and was sanctioned by the U.S. in 2021 for allegedly manipulating the judiciary.

After fleeing Ukraine in 2014, he lived in Russia and Austria before settling in Spain.

Spanish authorities have launched a full investigation, considering motives ranging from political retribution to organized crime.

No arrests have been made, and the attackers remain at large.
