Germany Deports 81 Afghans in First Flight Under Merz

Germany has deported 81 Afghan men back to Kabul, marking its first major deportation flight to Afghanistan under Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

The operation was carried out in cooperation with Qatar and is the second such deportation since the Taliban took power in 2021.

All of the deportees had criminal records and were under legal orders to leave.

Each was given €1,000 to prevent destitution upon arrival, a measure required by German courts.

The Interior Ministry defended the move as part of its firm approach to illegal migration.

Rights groups have criticised the policy, citing safety concerns in Afghanistan.
