Iran executes industrial contractor accused of spying for Israel

Iran has executed Babak Shahbazi, an industrial refrigeration contractor convicted of spying for Israel, according to its judiciary.

State media say Shahbazi sold sensitive intelligence about data centres and security sites allegedly connected to Iran’s military and security apparatus.

Human rights groups including Iran Human Rights dispute the charges, claiming Shahbazi was tortured into a false confession.

They report he was arrested after writing a letter to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy offering to fight against Russia.

Authorities also cited unusual evidence, including Shahbazi’s knowledge of using Microsoft Word, as proof of his ties to Israeli agents.
