Iran executed two members of the banned Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK) opposition movement at dawn on Monday at Ghezel Hesar Prison near Tehran.
Akbar Daneshvarkar, 58, and Mohammad Taghavi, 59, were convicted of armed rebellion and hanged following a Supreme Court-confirmed sentence dating back to proceedings in October 2024.
Both men were reportedly subjected to torture in Evin Prison’s notorious Ward 209 before their deaths.
Human rights groups say the executions are part of a broader wartime crackdown.
The National Council of Resistance of Iran condemned the hangings as an act of desperation by a regime “in fear of the people’s uprising.”
Iran now ranks as the world’s second most prolific executioner after China.
