In a dramatic escalation of Bangladesh’s anti-corruption purge, Labour MP Tulip Siddiq has been sentenced to two years in prison by a Dhaka court for allegedly influencing her aunt, ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to illegally allocate prime land plots.
The in-absentia trial, alongside 16 others including Hasina (five years) and Siddiq’s mother Sheikh Rehana (seven years), stems from a 13,610 sq ft Dhaka suburb deal during Hasina’s 15-year rule, which prosecutors claim siphoned billions in graft.
