Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood is pressuring PM Keir Starmer to support Palestinian statehood at the UN General Assembly, echoing France’s recent pledge.
Backed by other senior ministers including Wes Streeting and David Lammy, Mahmood says recognition would advance peace efforts and send a clear message to Israel.
The push comes as Starmer faces growing pressure from within Labour, with over a third of MPs calling for recognition.
While Starmer has remained cautious, tying recognition to a wider peace deal, internal calls for bold action are growing ahead of the UN’s key September session.
