The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado for her tireless efforts to promote democratic rights and her fight for a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.
Machado, a key figure in Venezuela’s pro-democracy movement, has long opposed President Nicolás Maduro’s rule and has faced political bans and harassment for her activism.
She called the award “a victory for the Venezuelan people” in a recorded statement.
The committee said her work symbolises the global struggle for freedom, justice and peaceful political change.
