The US military launched “Project Freedom” today, deploying guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 aircraft and 15,000 service members to “guide” hundreds of stranded ships out of the Strait of Hormuz.
CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper said the operation will run alongside the existing US blockade of Iranian ports.
Iran’s military responded with a direct threat to attack any “foreign armed force, especially the aggressive American army” that approaches the strait, and a senior parliament official warned the move would breach the ceasefire.
Just hours before the launch, an unidentified cargo ship was hit by small boats and a tanker was struck by “unknown projectiles” off Fujairah.
The operation is the most significant US military escalation since the ceasefire began on 8 April.
