The U.S. Senate has passed legislation repealing the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act, ending years of sweeping sanctions on Syria.
Syrian officials hailed the move as a “historic turning point,” with Economy Minister Mohammad Nidal al-Shaar calling it the start of a new era of recovery.
Central Bank Governor Abdulkader al-Husrieh said the repeal will ease hardship on the Syrian people and help reintegrate Syria into the global financial system.
Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry official Qutaiba Idlbi described the move as a response to “positive developments” in Syria and vowed diplomatic efforts to eliminate all remaining sanctions.
Next, the House must reconcile its version of the National Defence Authorisation Act before President Trump is expected to sign it into law.
