Syrian Government Arrests Palestinian Islamic Jihad Leader

The Syrian government has arrested Khaled Khaled, head of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) in Syria, along with senior organiser Abu Ali Yasser.

This is the first known detention of PIJ leaders under Syria’s new regime.

The arrests came shortly after a visit by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to Damascus.

PIJ was the second-largest terror group, after Hamas, to attack Israel on 7 October 2023.

Syria has long hosted PIJ leaders, although Israeli airstrikes recently hit their positions.

The move may signal a change in Syrian policy toward armed Palestinian groups operating on its soil.
