President Donald Trump has signed an executive order initiating a review of certain chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood for designation as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) and Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs).
The order specifically targets chapters in Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan, citing alleged ties to the militant group Hamas and support for violence against U.S. interests and allies.
Under the directive, the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of the Treasury have 30 days to submit a report assessing which chapters meet the legal threshold and 45 days from that to act on designations.
The move follows similar state-level actions, including the Greg Abbott-led decision in Texas to label the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American‑Islamic Relations (CAIR) as terrorist organisations.
