U.S. Citizen Dennis Coyle Released After Taliban Captivity

U.S. citizen Dennis Coyle has returned to the United States and reunited with his family after more than a year in Taliban captivity in Afghanistan.

Coyle, a 64 year old academic and researcher, had been held since January 2025 without formal charges.

His release followed diplomatic efforts involving the United States, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

American officials say other U.S. citizens are still believed to be held by the Taliban, and Washington continues to face pressure over the detention of Americans abroad.
