The UK government has deported its first migrant to France under the “one-in, one-out” agreement designed to curb small-boat crossings.
A man who arrived in the UK via small boat in August was flown to France on a commercial flight.
Under the deal, the UK will remove people who enter illegally while accepting a matching number of asylum seekers from France who have family ties in the UK.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood called it “an important first step to securing our borders,” though legal challenges have disrupted earlier removal attempts.
