UK-France Migrant Deal Hit by Smuggler Surge

Keir Starmer’s new “one‑in, one‑out” migrant returns agreement with French President Emmanuel Macron went live on 5 August, but was almost immediately tested.

Within hours of its launch, people-smuggling gangs sent hundreds of migrants across the English Channel in small boats.

UK Border Force vessels Typhoon and Ranger scrambled to intercept several craft near Dover, with more launches expected through the day.

The deal allows Britain to send an equal number of undocumented arrivals back to France in exchange for vetted asylum seekers, but with only around 50 returns possible each week, critics say it is already struggling to make an impact.
