Secretary of War Pete Hegseth forced out US Army Chief of Staff General Randy George during an active war, ordering him to retire immediately.
Two other senior generals were also removed: General David Hodne, commander of the Army’s Transformation and Training Command, and Major General William Green, head of the Army Chaplain Corps.
No reason was given. Hegseth’s former military aide, General Christopher LaNeve, will take over as acting Army chief.
The firing of America’s top Army officer during wartime is described by officials as “nearly without precedent.”
It is the latest in a long string of Hegseth purges of senior military leadership, following the earlier removal of the Joint Chiefs chairman, Chief of Naval Operations, and head of the Defence Intelligence Agency.
