Belarus opposition leader Nikolai Statkevich released from prison

Nikolai Statkevich, one of the most prominent leaders of the Belarusian opposition and a long-time rival of President Alexander Lukashenka, has been released from prison.

Statkevich, who ran in the 2010 presidential election, was arrested ahead of the 2020 vote and later sentenced to 14 years in a high-security prison for repeat offenders.

He spent much of his imprisonment in isolation, drawing international condemnation from human rights groups.

His release is seen as a significant moment for Belarus’s opposition movement, which has faced years of repression under Lukashenka’s rule.

Details on the conditions of his release remain unclear.
