Three armed men opened fire on police outside the building housing the Israeli consulate in Istanbul’s Besiktas district on Tuesday, sparking a gunfight that killed one attacker and wounded two others, as well as injuring two police officers.
Turkish authorities described the attackers as “terrorists,” with one said to have links to “an organisation that exploits religion.” Turkish media suggested a possible Islamic State connection.
The consulate has been unstaffed since October 2023 and no Israeli diplomats were present.
Turkish officials launched a formal investigation.
The attack comes as anti-Israel sentiment has surged across the region amid the Iran war, with analysts warning the conflict risks spurring copycat attacks against Israeli and US targets globally.
