The fragile March ceasefire between Pakistan and Afghanistan is unravelling after both sides reported deadly cross-border attacks on Monday.
The Taliban said Pakistani mortar and rocket fire on Kunar province killed four and wounded 45, including students at Sayed Jamaluddin Afghani University in Asadabad.
Pakistan reported three civilians injured in South Waziristan and accused the Taliban of harbouring TTP militants behind a sharp rise in suicide bombings inside Pakistan.
The trigger appears to have been the shooting of an Afghan child by Pakistani forces near Spin Boldak.
The two nuclear neighbours are once again on the brink of open war, with no mediator in sight.
