Israeli lawmakers from the ruling Likud party recently urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to formally apply Israeli sovereignty over parts of the West Bank, also known as Judea and Samaria.
They described it as both a “national imperative” and a response to growing international momentum to recognise a Palestinian state.
Netanyahu’s government has not made a final decision on annexation.
He has made clear opposition to “unilateral” recognition of Palestinian statehood without negotiations.
The issue remains controversial.
Applying sovereignty over occupied territories could provoke sharp diplomatic backlash, especially from countries supporting a two-state solution and from international law perspectives.
