Taliban Cuts Internet Access in Northern Afghanistan, Targeting Female Entrepreneurs

The Taliban has banned fibre-optic internet in five northern provinces, claiming it is a measure against “immoral activities.”

The move has severed access for thousands of homes, schools, and small businesses, leaving mobile data as the only alternative.

Women in Kandahar and Herat running embroidery shops and online sales say their livelihoods are collapsing due to soaring costs and unstable connections.

For entrepreneurs like Sabrinna Hayat, who leads a team sewing traditional dresses for international customers, the blackout threatens their only source of economic independence.

It marks the first major internet shutdown since the Taliban regained power in 2021.
