Merz and Orban Clash Over EU Defence and Ukraine Support

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz confronted Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban during EU talks in Copenhagen, accusing him of deliberately blocking progress on defence cooperation and aid for Ukraine.

Orban has repeatedly vetoed sanctions against Russia and opposed Ukraine’s EU membership, frustrating other leaders who see his stance as undermining European unity.

Merz argued that the EU cannot remain credible on security while one member obstructs critical decisions.

The heated exchange underscored growing divisions within the bloc as the war drags on, with Orban positioning himself as Moscow’s closest ally inside the EU despite mounting pressure from other states.
