Spain Proposes Enshrining Abortion Right in Constitution

Spain’s leftist government has announced a plan to make the right to abortion part of the country’s constitution, nearly 40 years after legalising the procedure.

The reform would require a three-fifths majority in the lower house, meaning support from the conservative People’s Party would be necessary.

The government says the move is a response to global challenges to reproductive freedom and aims to prevent misinformation regarding abortion, including so-called “post-abortion syndrome.”

Spain would become the second country in the world to constitutionally protect abortion rights, after France.
