Denmark has summoned the US ambassador in Copenhagen after President Donald Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as his special envoy for Greenland.
Trump said Landry understands “how important Greenland is to our national security and will firmly defend our country’s interests.”
The decision sparked immediate outrage in Copenhagen.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen called the move “completely unacceptable,” stressing that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and not a bargaining chip for US strategic ambitions.
The diplomatic protest underscores long standing tensions over American interest in the Arctic territory and Washington’s push for a greater foothold in the region.
