China Fires Missiles Near Taiwan in Blockade Drill

China has launched missiles that will land in waters near Taiwan as part of large scale military exercises simulating a blockade of the island.

Beijing says the drills are a warning to Taipei and to countries supporting Taiwan’s democratic government.

The manoeuvres include naval encirclement, missile launches and air force overflights aimed at demonstrating China’s ability to cut Taiwan off from the outside world.

Taipei has condemned the actions as a direct threat to regional stability.

The United States and its allies are monitoring the situation closely as tensions rise across the Taiwan Strait.
