UK Council Elections Delayed

Steve Reed has confirmed that 29 council elections due to take place in May will be postponed, triggering immediate political backlash.

The Communities Secretary said the delay is linked to ongoing local government reorganisation and the redrawing of council structures in several areas.

Critics argue the move undermines local democracy and denies voters their say, while ministers insist the postponement is necessary to avoid confusion and duplication during the transition.

The decision is expected to fuel fresh debate over electoral accountability and government control of local councils.
