AFRICOM Draws Up Plans for Possible Nigeria Operations

U.S. Africa Command has reportedly drafted plans for possible military operations in Nigeria to target Islamist groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP, according to reporting on AFRICOM’s growing focus in the region.

The plans are said to outline three levels of intervention, light, medium and heavy, but officials have not authorised any immediate deployment.

General Dagvin Anderson, AFRICOM’s commander, has been stepping up engagement with African partners and is expected to visit the region soon as part of efforts to coordinate responses to the evolving terrorist threat.

U.S. planners and regional experts say the proposals are aimed at pressuring insurgent networks and bolstering partner forces rather than signalling an imminent unilateral intervention by American combat troops.
