Swedish authorities suspect the Russian captain of the detained cargo ship Caffa of using forged maritime certificates and breaching maritime safety laws.
The vessel, which was sailing from Casablanca to Saint Petersburg under a Guinean flag, was intercepted in Swedish territorial waters after officials questioned the validity of its registration.
Investigators believe the ship may effectively be “stateless,” meaning it lacks a recognised flag state responsible for its compliance with maritime regulations.
Authorities also reported serious safety deficiencies on board.
Prosecutors are expected to decide on March 10 whether the captain will remain in custody or be released as the investigation continues.
