The United Nations human rights office has reported that Iranian authorities have executed at least 841 people since the start of 2025.
This marks a significant increase compared to previous years.
More than 110 executions took place in July alone, more than double the count from July 2024.
UN spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani expressed alarm, stating that the spike reflects a systematic use of capital punishment as a tool for intimidation and repression, particularly targeting ethnic minorities and migrants.
She noted that among those facing imminent execution are individuals accused of “armed rebellion” or involvement in the 2022 protests.
The UN has called on Iran to impose a temporary halt to executions as a first step toward abolishing the death penalty entirely
