Australia will deploy a military surveillance aircraft to the Middle East and send air to air missiles to the United Arab Emirates as the regional conflict intensifies.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the move is defensive and aimed at helping protect Gulf airspace and Australian citizens in the region.
The aircraft being sent is an E-7A Wedgetail, supported by Australian defence personnel for an initial four week mission.
Canberra stressed it is not sending ground troops or joining offensive operations against Iran.
The decision follows growing instability across the Gulf and rising concern over missile and drone attacks.
