Israel says it has killed Gholamreza Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s Basij paramilitary force, in a targeted strike.
The IDF said Soleimani had led the Basij for the past six years and accused him of overseeing the regime’s main repression operations, including widespread arrests, violent crackdowns and the use of force against civilian demonstrators.
Iran had not publicly confirmed the claim at the time of reporting.
The Basij, a key arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, has long been used to suppress unrest inside Iran.
The reported killing marks another major blow to Tehran’s internal security apparatus.
