Bristol Council Mocked for Replacing ‘Pregnant Women’ with ‘People with Ovaries’

Bristol City Council, run by the Green Party, is facing backlash after suggesting that the phrase “pregnant women” be replaced with “people with ovaries.”

The proposal was submitted to the Equality and Human Rights Commission during its review of how “sex” and “woman” should be defined, shortly after the UK Supreme Court ruled those terms apply only to biological females.

Council officials claimed that words like “she” and “maternity” could distress trans men and non-binary people.

Women’s groups condemned the move, with Mara Ricoy Olariaga of FiLiA calling it “dehumanising” and a reduction of women to their organs.
