The AA and RAC are advising motorists to conserve fuel and avoid non essential journeys amid fears that rising global oil prices could soon push petrol costs higher.
The warning comes as tensions in energy markets drive crude prices upward, raising concerns that UK forecourts may soon reflect the increase.
Motoring groups say drivers should consider combining trips, reducing unnecessary travel and driving more efficiently to limit fuel use.
They warn that if oil prices continue climbing, petrol and diesel prices across the UK could rise sharply in the coming weeks, putting further pressure on household budgets.
