Georgia’s ex-PM charged with large-scale money laundering

Irakli Garibashvili, former Prime Minister of Georgia, has been formally charged with money laundering involving exceptionally large sums, the Prosecutor General announced.

The case alleges he engaged in secret business activities and received illicit income while holding office, in violation of anti-corruption laws.

A court has ordered bail of 1 million Georgian lari (approx. US$367 000), confiscation of his passport and travel restrictions.

Garibashvili was closely aligned with billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili and served two terms as prime minister under the ruling Georgian Dream party.
