Germany’s main seaports have asked the Defence Ministry for €3 billion to strengthen infrastructure and security in anticipation of a possible war with Russia.
The Central Association of German Seaports (ZDS) sent a letter to Defence Minister Boris Pistorius warning that ports would be on the “front line of attack” because of their role in moving Bundeswehr equipment, troops and NATO forces.
The funding request covers upgrades to infrastructure as well as new measures to protect facilities from missile strikes and cyberattacks.
Germany’s largest ports include Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Wilhelmshaven and Rostock.
