Health Secretary Launches National Investigation into NHS Maternity Scandals

Health Secretary Wes Streeting has ordered a national investigation into NHS maternity services across England following a series of devastating failings over the past two decades.

The probe will examine up to ten of the worst performing units and produce an interim report by December 2025.

Previous scandals in Morecambe Bay, East Kent, Shrewsbury and Telford and Nottingham are believed to have contributed to over 200 baby deaths and nine maternal fatalities.

Streeting announced the creation of a national taskforce comprising experts and bereaved family members.

He said maternity care must be a benchmark for patient safety and pledged urgent action to prevent such tragedies.
