Portugal to Recognise Palestinian State “As Early as September”

Portugal is preparing to officially recognise the State of Palestine at the UN General Assembly in September 2025, joining France, the UK, Canada, and Malta.

Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel confirmed that Lisbon will support the Palestinian Authority as the legitimate government, stressing Portugal’s independent but coordinated approach with EU partners.

The recognition depends on the fulfilment of agreed conditions, including reforms already backed by France and others.

Israel has condemned the move as rewarding terrorism, while the United States boycotted the recent UN conference.

Portugal says this is a practical step toward a two-state solution.
