Six EU countries — Bulgaria, Czechia, Estonia, Croatia, Austria and Poland — are stepping back from the EU’s new Migration and Asylum Pact, claiming they are under too much pressure to participate.
The pact, due to take effect in 2026, asks members to either take in migrants, send money, or contribute resources.
Brussels says it will allow temporary exemptions as a “practical measure,” but critics argue it undermines the idea of European solidarity.
To calm tensions, the EU has announced €250 million in funding for border drone surveillance and security upgrades along key entry routes.
