A Togolese soldier was killed and two others wounded after their patrol vehicle was struck by a guided improvised explosive device near Kouampante, close to the Burkina Faso border.
Military officials said the attack is believed to have been carried out by Islamist militants operating in the region.
The explosion destroyed the vehicle and triggered a brief exchange of fire before the attackers fled.
Togo’s northern border area has faced increasing militant activity spilling over from Burkina Faso, where jihadist groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS remain active.
Security forces have since intensified patrols in the affected zone.
