Prime Minister Keir Starmer has ordered NHS trusts and universities to ban trans women from women’s toilets and hospital wards, insisting that all public bodies comply with the UK Supreme Court ruling from April 16 2025 that defines “woman” based on biological sex.
Starmer said existing delays are unacceptable and that guidance must now align with the law.
Women’s groups have welcomed the announcement, warning that failing to enforce the ruling puts female staff and patients at risk.
The move follows reports that some NHS trusts and universities are still awaiting further instructions from the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
