Syrian to face trial in Poland over border smuggling

A Syrian national living legally in Germany is to stand trial in Poland accused of organising illegal crossings from Belarus into Poland for at least 160 people.

Prosecutors say he earned more than $48,000 from the operation while also serving a prison sentence in Germany for financial fraud.

Twelve other members of the group have already been convicted, receiving prison terms ranging from six months to two and a half years.

The case is part of wider efforts by Polish authorities to dismantle smuggling networks operating along the tense Polish-Belarusian border.
