Syria’s interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, will speak at the United Nations General Assembly next month, marking the first time a Syrian leader has addressed the body in decades, a foreign ministry official confirmed Monday.
Sharaa, who seized power in December after Islamist-led forces ousted Bashar al-Assad, will deliver his speech during the high-level week from September 22-30.
The last Syrian president to speak at the UN was Nureddin al-Atassi in 1967.
Despite UN sanctions and a travel ban, Sharaa has already met world leaders, including US President Donald Trump and France’s Emmanuel Macron, amid growing international recognition.
