Trump Slaps New Tariffs on India Over Russia Ties

President Donald Trump has announced a 25 percent tariff and additional penalties on India, starting August 1st, citing unfair trade practices and India’s continued purchase of Russian energy and weapons.

In a statement, Trump referred to India as a “friend” but criticised its high tariffs, strict trade barriers, and close relationship with Russia, particularly during the war in Ukraine.

He said India is one of Russia’s largest energy buyers, along with China, and argued that this undermines global efforts to stop the conflict in Ukraine.

The move signals a clear warning to India’s leadership.
