UK Prisons in Meltdown as Hundreds Released by Mistake

Britain’s prison system is under fire after revelations that 262 inmates were mistakenly released in the year to March 2025, more than double the total from the previous year.

Justice Minister David Lammy admitted that “several prisoners are mistakenly released each week,” including sex offenders and foreign nationals awaiting deportation.

One Ethiopian asylum seeker convicted of assault was among those freed in error, sparking protests and a three-day manhunt before his recapture.

Junior minister Alex Davies-Jones described the system as “utter chaos,” blaming years of budget cuts and neglect.

Overcrowding has reached record levels across England and Wales.
