UK Set to Approve China’s Mega-Embassy in London

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to approve the construction of a 20,000-square-metre embassy for China in central London next month, following cleared assessments by the security services.

Both MI5 and MI6 reportedly indicated they can manage the national-security risks posed by the project.

The site under consideration is the former Royal Mint Court near Tower Bridge.

Approval is scheduled for 10 December once formal departmental responses from the Home Office and Foreign Office are submitted.

While opponents raise concerns over espionage potential and the proximity of sensitive fibre-optic cables beneath the site, the government appears to be balancing strategic engagement with Beijing against security imperatives.
