China signals willingness to deepen ties with Japan under new leadership

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said Beijing “hopes Japan will work with China in the same direction” after Sanae Takaichi became Japan’s prime minister.

He noted that as close neighbours, “China’s position on its relations with Japan is consistent and clear.”

China also urged Tokyo to honour its political commitments on sensitive issues such as Taiwan and history.

The remarks come as Takaichi takes office and signal Beijing’s attempt to secure stable bilateral relations ahead of an uncertain period in Japan’s foreign policy.
